Mechanic tip, mark that gray cover with a sharpe pen closed position and open posistion. That way you know where it will close properly and where you reinstall it. The bulb has a red and black wire red to the bulb and black to a little metal ground under the metal spring that holds the bulb and ground to the reflector. Do not touch the glass on the new bulb. You'd better have small hands, especially for the passenger side headlight! The space under the hood is very tight!!! Now our cars have separate high and low beams, so make sure you know which bulb is burned out. I bet it is the low beam though.
Pay attention to how you undo the headlight, cuz you will have to reverse the steps to put it back together.
Basically, you have to undo the wiring harness, pull the black rubber grommet thing, undo the black twist on %26quot;cap%26quot; by turning counter-clockwise and there is a wire clip holding the bulb in. Be very careful because the wire does NOT come out. If you break the plastic piece that the wire is attached to, you will need to buy a new headlight. Yike!
Once you are successful in undoing that, take the bulb out and TAKE THE BASE (or socket) OFF! DO NOT THROW AWAY THE BASE. You will have to reuse that. Now reversed all the steps the put it back together.

Don't twist the light bulbs or the wires but almost the whole thing. It should come out easy. Be careful taking it out if it was recently on because it's going to be hot. If it's broken then never mind it and wiggle it out. Insert the new headlight bulbs but don't touch the glass because you will decrease the life of the bulb. Make sure you don't lose the rubber seal on the way in because that'll get some water in possibly burning it out or fogging up the headlight hence decreasing visibility. You have a choice, either:
Take out the little grill below the windscreen to gain access to the back of the headlight. Then you reach in and remove the old bulb and replace. Unfortunately, you will need to break your arm in 3 places and grow fingers 2 feet long to do this easily as you will be working blind, at full stretch in a very confined space. So for the next time I did one I used option 2 which is:
Remove the entire front panel of the car, remove the headlight, change the bulb, and refit the front panel. This sounds ridiculous, but it's dead easy and takes about 20 minutes as opposed to 2.5 hours of fiddling.
To remove the front panel:
unscrew and remove the arial for the radio.
Remove the door mirrors (3 torx screws each from inside the car) and let the mirrors hang.
remove the little silver grill (may have fog lights) - this achieved with a small screwdriver that can be used to release 5(?) plastic clips moulded into the grill that hold it in place.
Behind where you have removed the little grill you will see 2 further torx screws that need to come out (1 on each side).
Open the driver and passenger doors, you will see approximately 5 torx screws (on each side) that you need to take out to release the front panel.
Lift off the front panel carefully, gently unplugging the indicator repeaters as you do it.
Headlight is simply screwed into place with all screws visible.
And as the Haynes manual would no doubt say %26quot;refitting is the reversal of removal%26quot;

As per the manual you take it to a Smart garage (I've had two done) the reason being that you have to access it via one of the access vents, which are very small, and you can't actually see what you're doing. Alternatively you can remove the entire front panel. Whichever you do replace both. I didn't and 10 days later the 2nd one blew!

My question is about the gray ring over the bulb. Does that come off to pull the bulb or does the bulb turn and come out through the slots in the gray ring? I don't want to break anything, any hints?

Can anyone help? I cannot gain access to the rear of my Jeeps headlights so as to change the bulbs. Take care with the lead to the side light , the main bulb is held in place by the %26quot;usual%26quot; spring clip. When you put it all back together make sure that the lights work BEFORE you put all the trim back, it`s very easy to dislodge the side light bulb!
The procedure is covered in detail in the Haynes manual.
I`ve done this job several times, and it still takes me at least 30 mins to do !

replace bulb. do not touch the bulb glass, hold it on the base.
secure bulb with clamps.
return the rubber thing,
connect wires.

The manual says take it to Nissan, but I want to do it myself. There's no easy spot to screw out the old lamp, pop the halogen bulb in, and then screw it back up. Any help out there, much appreciated!!How to change a headlight bulb on a 2003 Nissan Altima.?screw that easy way i do it at nissan is to remove bumper, way easier, and you dont mess up bulb or hand trying to reach in small places, to remove just take all the snap clips of top of bumper i think there is 6 then remove the screw in splash shield and peel back fender liner reach up inside there is two 10 mm bolts on each corner of headlight remove those on each light, then pull bumper out and down and let hang, then there is 4 10 mm securing headlight, remove then pull out headlight and change bulb, its not hard like it sounds but im an exp nissan tech and i have the lift to work on with out scrpaing up bumper, so you might want to take to nissan, its not hard at all , the other way the guy before me said is another way i just hate doing it that way and do it my way, there is a recall on the headlights just to let you know, they burn out from a bad ground if you take it to nissan they will do recall and install two new bulbs included for free, you should call with your vin to c if your car has had that done yet,How to change a headlight bulb on a 2003 Nissan Altima.?does one have to unplug the high voltage wires from module to light first? if other lights running lights, high beam are working does that mean it's not a module problem but a bulb problem?

How to change a headlight bulb on a 2003 Nissan Altima.?I'll try and explain it, but if you still can't do it, go to www.altimas.net and search in the forum. It's not easy, on the passenger side bulb, remove your coolant reservoir. I believe it's 3 bolts. On the drivers side, I believe it's easier if you remove the top of your air box. (I have a cold air intake, so my whole air box assembly is gone) Once you have access to the white plastic cover, turn counterclockwise to remove the covers. Then the bulb is held in by a metal clip. If you look at it closely, you must push the clip towards the front of the car, then to the side, and the clip will release and you can then change the bulb. Then re-assemble...
